Final Expense Insurance in Garland
Final expense insurance is a small life policy meant to pay for a funeral, a last hospital bill and the loose ends that come after. We explain how these policies work, what the health questions mean and what you would pay each month.
What final expense coverage is, and who it fits
Most final expense plans are whole life insurance in a smaller size. You lock in the monthly cost on day one, and it stays put. Coverage lasts for life rather than stopping at a cutoff age, as long as you keep paying. When you die, the money goes to your beneficiary to use however they need.
It usually fits people in their 50s through their 80s who want to cover burial or cremation, a final medical bill, or a few months of leftover expenses. It is also common for people who have health problems and assume they cannot get any life insurance at all.
It is not the right tool for replacing years of income or paying off a large loan. If that is the goal, term life insurance or mortgage protection insurance will usually give you more coverage for the money. We will tell you which one makes sense.

What we go over with you
- 01
How much coverage you need
We add up what you want covered: the funeral or cremation, a plot or urn, an outstanding medical bill, maybe a small amount left over. Then we size the policy to that number instead of guessing high.
- 02
Which type of policy you qualify for
Some plans, called simplified issue, rely on a few yes-or-no questions about your health and typically skip the exam. Others, called guaranteed issue, leave out the health questions entirely but come with a waiting period. Your answers tell us which kind to look at.
- 03
The waiting period, in plain terms
On many guaranteed issue plans, if you die of an illness during the early years of the policy, often two or three, the carrier hands back what you paid in, usually with some interest, instead of the full amount. Accidental death is typically covered from the start. We read that section with you so nobody is caught off guard later.
- 04
Naming your beneficiary
We walk through who gets the money and how to name a backup. A clear beneficiary line is what lets the payment go to a person instead of getting tied up.
- 05
Monthly cost side by side
We lay out what the premium looks like at a few coverage amounts. You pick the one that fits your budget.
Questions about Final Expense Insurance?
Call(972) 910-7230When a final expense policy makes sense
Your old policy ended
A lot of people had term coverage through work or a 20-year policy that has now expired. Final expense coverage can fill that gap without starting over on a large policy.
You don't want your kids paying for the funeral
Funeral and burial costs often land on adult children who did not plan for them. A policy set aside for that purpose takes the bill off their plate.
You were turned down before
Diabetes, heart trouble or past cancer can rule out a standard policy. Simplified or guaranteed issue coverage may still be open to you.
Savings are earmarked for other things
If your savings need to cover living expenses now, a small policy keeps that money from being drained at the end.
How it works, start to finish
- 1
A phone conversation
We ask how old you are, a little about your health, and which bills you want the policy to handle. It is a short call, and you are under no obligation.
- 2
Health questions and options
We go through the carrier's health questions with you. Based on the answers, we show you the policies you are likely to qualify for and what each one costs per month.
- 3
Application
If you decide to go ahead, we fill out the application together. For most simplified issue policies there is no exam and no blood work.
- 4
Policy in hand
Once it is approved, we go over the policy with you: the face amount, the premium, any waiting period and the beneficiary. Keep a copy where your family can find it.
What sets your monthly premium
Your premium is fixed on the day the policy starts and stays level from then on. Five things decide where it lands. You see the numbers before you apply, not after.
- Your age when you buy
- This is the biggest factor. The same coverage costs more at 75 than at 65, so waiting usually raises the premium.
- Your health answers
- Clean answers on a simplified issue application usually get the best rate. Some conditions move you to a higher rate class or to guaranteed issue, which costs more.
- Coverage amount
- Final expense policies are small, and every step up in face amount adds to the monthly bill. Sizing it to real costs keeps it affordable.
- Tobacco use
- If you smoke, chew or vape, expect a higher rate. Most carriers put tobacco users in a separate, costlier class.
- Policy type
- Guaranteed issue costs more per dollar of coverage than simplified issue because the carrier takes on more risk and asks no health questions.
Common questions about final expense
Is a medical exam required?
Usually not. These policies use a short list of health questions instead of a nurse visit or blood test. Guaranteed issue policies drop the questions as well, but they have a waiting period.
Does the premium rise as I age?
No. Most final expense policies fix the premium when you buy, and it doesn't change for as long as you keep the policy paid.
Does the funeral home get paid directly?
Only if you arrange it. The payout goes to your named beneficiary, who chooses how to use it: the service, a hospital bill, travel for family. To send some of it straight to a funeral home, you can set up an assignment, and we'll explain how that works.
How does this compare to standard whole life?
Final expense is whole life with a smaller face amount and easier underwriting. For more coverage or more cash value, see our whole life insurance and universal life insurance pages.
Can I get a policy on my parent?
Usually the insured person must know about the policy and sign the application. Garland families often handle it together in a single call, naming the adult child as beneficiary, and sometimes that child pays the premium.
