Universal Life Insurance in Garland
Universal life is permanent coverage that bends. Your premium can rise or fall from year to year, and the coverage amount can shift within the carrier's limits. We show you how the cash value and monthly charges work, so you know what keeps the policy going and what could make it lapse.
How universal life works and who it suits
Universal life, like all life insurance, pays your beneficiary when you die. The difference is in how it works underneath. Every premium is divided: part pays the cost of insurance and fees, and the rest goes into a cash value account that earns interest. Coverage continues as long as that account can cover the monthly charges.
This design lets you pay more in strong years and less in tight ones. It also means you share the responsibility. Insurance costs rise with age, and a policy funded too lightly at the start can run out of money in your 70s or 80s.
It usually suits people who want lifelong coverage with more flexibility than whole life, business owners whose income varies, and anyone who wants a fixed sum left to a spouse or child whenever they die. If the need ends on a known date, like your youngest finishing school or the final mortgage payment, term life is cheaper. We will tell you that from the start.
What we cover when we set up a policy
Picking the right type
There is more than one kind. Guaranteed universal life keeps premiums level and focuses on the death benefit, with little cash value. Indexed universal life credits interest based on how a stock index performs, with a set minimum and maximum. A fixed-rate version simply pays whatever rate the carrier announces each year.
Reading the illustration with you
Every quote comes with an illustration that has a guaranteed column and a projected column. We go through both. The guaranteed side is what you can count on if interest rates disappoint.
Setting a funding target
We work out a premium that keeps the policy healthy to the age you choose, not just the lowest number that gets it issued.
Beneficiaries and ownership
We sort out who gets the money first, who gets it if that person is gone, and whose name belongs on the policy as owner. Those choices affect taxes and how fast the money reaches the right people.
Riders worth a look
Some policies offer riders for chronic illness, waiver of charges if you become disabled, or added coverage for a spouse. We explain what each one costs and leave off the ones you do not need.
When universal life is worth checking
Term coverage running out
Many term contracts let you switch to permanent coverage without a new medical exam, up to an age written into the policy. If your level period is nearly over and you still need protection, universal life is one place that conversion can land.
Your income goes up and down
Commission, seasonal or self-employed income makes a fixed premium hard to keep. Flexible premiums let you pay more when work is strong and ease off when it is slow.
You want money left behind for certain
Final costs, an inheritance or evening out what each child receives are needs that do not end on a date. Permanent coverage matches them.
An old statement worries you
If your annual statement shows the cash value shrinking or a projected lapse date, act now. A small premium increase today costs far less than a large one later.
You co-own a company
When partners agree to buy out each other's share, a permanent policy is a common way to pay for it. Coverage on a person the company can't easily replace works the same way, since the need lasts as long as the company does.
How getting a policy works
- 1
A conversation first
We start by asking what the money should do, who would rely on it and what monthly amount feels comfortable. No paperwork yet.
- 2
Quotes and illustrations
We compare carriers and go over the illustrations with you by phone, guaranteed and projected numbers side by side.
- 3
Application and underwriting
You answer health questions. Depending on your age and the coverage amount, the carrier may ask for a short paramedical exam, lab work or records from your doctor.
- 4
Policy delivery
Once approved, we go through the policy page by page before you accept it, including the free-look window that lets you cancel for a refund.
- 5
Yearly check-ins
Universal life needs a look every year. We review your statement with you and flag anything that points toward a lapse while it is still easy to fix.
What moves the price
Universal life usually costs more than term for the same coverage and less than whole life. Your premium depends on you, the policy type and how long you want coverage guaranteed. We lay out the numbers before you apply, so nothing on the first bill surprises you.
- Age and health
- Younger, healthier applicants get lower rates. Tobacco use, blood pressure, weight and family history all play a part in the rate class you receive.
- Coverage amount
- A larger death benefit means higher monthly charges inside the policy, which takes a bigger premium to support.
- How long the guarantee runs
- A policy guaranteed to age 90 costs less than one guaranteed to 121. Picking a realistic age is one of the biggest levers you have.
- How you fund it
- Paying more early builds cash value that helps cover rising charges later. Paying the bare minimum keeps the bill low now but raises the risk of a lapse.
- Riders
- Each rider adds a charge. Some are worth it, some are not, and we tell you which is which.
Common universal life questions
Something not covered here? (972) 910-7230
Is it possible for universal life to lapse?
It is. When the cash value can't pay the monthly charges, the policy ends unless you put in more. This usually happens when premiums were set too low or interest credited fell short of projections. A no-lapse guarantee or a yearly review keeps it from happening.
Why choose this instead of whole life?
Whole life keeps the premium the same each year and lays out cash value growth in the contract. Universal life lets the premium change, and sometimes the coverage amount as well. In exchange, fewer things are promised unless you pick a guaranteed version. The extra flexibility means you have to watch it.
Can I take a loan from the cash value?
In most cases. Loans carry interest and lower your beneficiary's payout if not repaid. A big unpaid loan can also trigger a lapse, so we show you the impact first.
What if I miss a payment?
With enough cash value, coverage continues and charges are taken from that account. Miss too many and it runs out. We can tell you how many months your balance would last.
Should I think of indexed universal life as an investment?
It's life insurance before anything else. Interest follows an index with a cap and a floor, so market drops don't cost you, but you give up some of the upside. It doesn't replace a retirement account; our retirement income planning page covers that.
Do you help people who live outside Garland?
We do. Our clients come from all over the area, Rowlett, Sachse, Richardson and Mesquite among them. It all begins with a phone call.
